Dorm Room Giveaway for Over 100 Students

More than 100 of San Antonio ISD's newest alumni and their parents came to the Alamo Convocation Center on July 21 to pick out brand new bedding, towels, pillows, laundry hampers and more. SAISD alumni Carmen (Jefferson) and Joe (Lanier) Gamez and the Joe Gamez Law Firm supported the first 75 students at the event. When Carmen stopped by the giveaway she said, "This is an awesome opportunity for the students. I wished I had something like this when I went to college." Many of the individual donors who gave to our dorm room drive were also alumni who shared similar stories with comments like, "I was first-generation too. I remember how difficult it was."

It was exciting to see all of the great local and Texas colleges where our students are headed. It was also fun to visit with those students headed out of state to colleges including: Boston University, Brown, Loyola in Chicago, Princeton, University of Pittsburgh and Emory. For these students, luggage was a must and can be an expensive addition. Thank you to the individuals who answered the call and came by with a donated piece or two of luggage to share.

Program of the Month: Emergency Gap

Thanks to the generosity of a few key individual donors and general fundraising efforts, we have been able to expand our emergency gap program significantly over the past four years. The program started out of an identified need to support students with a housing deposit or an orientation fee before their financial aid was awarded. Although we continue to do just that, it has grown into a robust program to remove a variety of barriers that might get in the way of our recent alumni being able to get to the first day of college or persist to degree completion. From a computer for a new engineering student, to a flight to get to the first day of school at Loyola of Chicago (photo above), this program helps our students reach their goals! In 2022 to date, through this program, we have assisted 65 students.

With the addition of our contracted Postsecondary Navigators and referrals from Remote Mentors, we are able to connect with more students and are presented with the tremendous opportunity to assist where a small investment can make a big difference. We know our students are doing the hard work, and we are honored to be able to support them. Your donations make our investments possible! Hear from our students about the impact on our website here.
